Community Project Month Begins May 1

The Pinawa Foundation’s Community Project Month runs from May 1 to May 31. Fifteen groups will be canvassing for donations to support their projects this year. Please consider donating to one or more of these projects through the Pinawa Foundation. The Foundation will stretch your donations by 40% (to a maximum of $2,000 per project).

This year’s projects include:

Children’s Place Daycare – AED with infant/child pods: Goal: $2,500

The daycare has selected the purchase of an automated external defibrillator (AED) with infant/child pads as the Community project this year. These AED Packages bundle key necessities that a daycare needs to be prepared for sudden cardiac arrest.

Survivor’s Hope – Let’s Talk about SARAH crisis program:Goal: $3,000

Survivors of sexual violence in our community need to know they’re supported. They need to know their community believes them, stands behind them, and that healing is possible. The “Let’s Talk About SARAH” project will provide opportunities to further the impact of the Sexual Assault Recovery and Healing (SARAH) counselling and crisis programs, by funding outreach efforts to connect individuals with support and enhance their experiences. This includes printed resource materials, self-care and wellness items, promotional materials, and supplies for Healing and Drop-in groups. Funds raised during Community Project Month will be used to support this program. Our community benefits when all its members are thriving and living to their full potential by over-coming difficult experiences and uplifting each other.

Pinawa Health Auxiliary – Bed Replacement Project: Goal: $10,000

The Health Auxiliary has selected upgrading the beds at the hospital as their community project this year. The current beds are older and have been described as uncomfortable. This project will benefit all the patients in the hospital.

Orville Acres Arena – Ice Plant Compressor Overhaul: Goal: $40,000

The ice plant is essential for the operation of the arena. The funds collected during Community Project Month will be used to complete the compressor overhaul project that began in 2023.

Pinawa Families for Community Growth – Burrows Baseball Diamond Fencing: Goal $11,350

Pinawa Families for Community Growth is spearheading baseball programming in our community. We have created a baseball association in our community and joined with Baseball Manitoba to offer Rally Cap and Grand Slam baseball programs in our community. We also will be offering a casual tball program for 2–3-year-olds.

For phase 1 of the ball diamond fencing project, we plan to extend a fence from either side of the backstop to fenced in player boxes. The goal of this project is to increase the safety and functionality of the existing Burrows ball diamond. The addition, this fencing will protect spectators from foul balls and give players a safe place to sit.

Courts of Pinawa Club – Free Pickle Ball/Tennis Clinics: Goal: $6,210

The Organizing Committee wants to offer free tennis and pickleball camps for juniors and adult beginners to introduce both sports and encourage youth and community participation for recreation and health benefits. Also 2 benches and 2 picnic tables for parents and spectators alongside the courts will be purchased from the funds raised during Community Project Month. The camps will be run by certified professionals who will use proven coaching methods and junior racquets/paddles/balls to teach the basic skills and rules of each game. Spectators and parents will be able to watch from the benches and picnic tables, which will also serve as a community gathering place.

Pinawa Art 211 – Community Garden Restoration; Garden Art Workshop: Goal $5,300

Our goal is to replace the existing deteriorated beds and garden area, plus add a path, shed and tools. The Pinawa Community Garden is located in the fenced courtyard at Pinawa Secondary School. The Pinawa Community Garden offers Pinawa residents the opportunity to plant, nourish and harvest their own healthy vegetables while spending time out-of-doors in a safe and secure environment. The garden fosters intergenerational participation between seniors, students, and other residents while they are working together on a project that is of mutual interest. The requested funds will help to make the garden more appealing to seniors and we hope it will increase interest in the garden. Pinawa Art 211 plans to add signage to the garden, to make it more visible and welcoming, as well as displaying art that is appropriate for outdoor and public use, that will be donated by local artists. In addition, Pinawa Art 211 plan to run a workshop that will allow residents to create painted peace poles from 4×4 wooden posts that would also be displayed in the garden.

Pinawa Cancer Care – Treatment Chair Replacement: Goal: $7,000

The Pinawa Cancer Care Program wants to upgrade the treatment chairs at the Cancercare Centre in Pinawa with funds raised during Community Project Month. There are 4 chairs in the centre. This campaign will allow us to upgrade two chairs.

F. W. Gilbert PAC – Hill Slide Play Area: Goal $5,000

The F.W. Gilbert School Parent Advisory Council is eager to complete the final portion of a natural playground. The hill slide project began construction in late summer of 2023, with the installation of a double slide and the beginnings of a hill. This year, plans include additional material and machine work to complete the final shaping, as well as the installation of a climbing ramp and a safety surfacing area. Landscaping including topsoil, sod and deer-friendly perennials will complete the play area. The completion of the hill slide play area will benefit the community by providing another unique, nature-based opportunity for play within the F.W. Gilbert School grounds. This playground is well used by children from the school and daycare during the week, as well as families and community groups on evenings and weekends.

Pinawa Holiday Cheer Committee – Tall Trees (metal) Light Enhancement: Goal: $1,500

The Committee would like to add new, taller metal trees to the light display, as well as additional lighting pieces, including twinkling light projectors, to further light up the display space at the Pinawa Marina and expand the display size. The committee’s goal is to maintain and improve the display each year for the community members to enjoy during the holiday season.

Pinawa Lions Club – Pinawa Birthday Weekend Expenses (tent/facilities): Goal $5,500

The Lions Club is raising funds to pay for the Pinawa Birthday weekend tent rental. The tent will be used by the Lions Club for their dance on Saturday, July 20. For the rest of the weekend, it is available to be used free of charge by any non-profit group.

Two Rivers Seniors – Services for Seniors programs: Goal: $6,000

The Two Rivers Seniors Council offers a variety of services to Pinawa residents. This campaign is to raise funds to maintain and expand these services in 2024.

Pinawa Public Library – Dolly Parton Imagination Library: Goal: $2,500

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides a book a month to each Pinawa child up to the age of 5 years. The Dolly Parton Foundation pays for the books, but the library must pay for postage. Thanks to a generous individual donation this project has already started with families signed up for the program. We are seeking funds to ensure we can add additional families and continue the program well into the future.

WSXC Ski Club – Trail Signage (metal signs/posts): Goal: $5,000

The maps and signs on the ski trail are an important component of the trail system and are in need of replacement. The Club has designed new, updated trail maps and signs, and is poised to install them before the next ski season. Durable metal signs and posts will complement the new wayfinding information for trail users.

Pinawa Recreation Committee – Bronze Lifeguard Lessons (10 students): Goal: $2,500

The goal of this project is to encourage young people to continue in higher level swim training to work toward becoming lifeguards to provide services to the Pinawa Swimming Pool. All pools, including Pinawa’s, are facing shortages of qualified lifeguards to provide swimming lessons and supervision of pool patrons during the summer months.

The project funds will be used to offer free Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross lessons to remove any barriers which may restrict youth from progressing to lifeguard training.
