The Pinawa Foundation presented their Citizenship Scholarship and the Gladys Guthrie Memorial Scholarship at the recent Pinawa Graduation Ceremony.
The awards go to students who have demonstrated an active interest in their school community as well as the community beyond the walls of Pinawa Secondary School (PSS).
Pinawa Foundation Scholarship ($1,500)
The Pinawa Foundation Scholarship goes to the student who has participated in the school community on student council, volunteer coaching. sports teams and YIP. Girl Guides provided more opportunities for volunteer work and taught her valuable life skills.
This year’s award was presented to Scotlynd (Scottie) McKay who plans to pursue a career in animal health technology at Lakeland College in Alberta.
Gladys Guthrie Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
Gladys Guthrie was one of the first nurses in Pinawa Hospital and an excellent example of the most important principle of the nursing profession; according to those in your care value, dignity and kindness. This memorial scholarship in her memory has been established by her family to be presented to a deserving student entering nursing or a related field of health care.
This award was presented to Carmen Sandul who plans to pursue a career in occupational therapy or physiotherapy at the University of Winnipeg. Carmen participated in high school sports (volleyball and soccer) as well as ringette. She is a certified lifeguard. Girl Guides offered her experience of volunteer work at the hospital, the Ironwood and highway clean up. LIVE opened her to opportunities to fundraise to help other charities such as the Salvation Army and Craig Street Cats.
